Identity Theft: It can happen to you

As you probably know, identity theft has become more and more of an issue over the past five years. Although there is no surefire way of protecting yourself against identity theft there are some moves you can make to stay safe. The first thing you should realize is that identity theft can happen to you. Many people think they are protected against this for one reason or the next, but nothing could be further from the truth. No matter who you are, young or old, or where you live you can be a target for identity theft.

Generally speaking, identity theft is nothing more than somebody pretending to be you in order to take advantage of benefits such as stealing money, opening accounts in your name, etc.

By being cautious you can help to protect yourself against identity theft. Now that you know you can be targeted it is important to realize how to stay safe. To start, you should never share your personal and financial information with anybody you do not trust. It does not take much for your identity to be stolen. For instance, if somebody finds your social security number they can do a lot of things. You want to keep this information close to your vest at all times.

How will you know if you have become a victim of identity theft? One of the best ways is to monitor your credit report, bank statements, and credit card bills. Do you see an account that should not be open? A purchase you did not make? If so, you need to investigate right away. There is a chance that your identity has been stolen.

The first step in avoiding identity theft is realizing you can become a victim. This can happen to you, but if you exercise caution and monitor your credit report you are doing your part in maintaining a safe identity.
