I've just discovered that my identity was stolen. I don't even know where to begin with taking care of fixing it. Does anyone know if I should start making phone calls or who to call?

Gracie, That's terrible! I'm so sorry. Have you called and canceled all of your cards? What exactly to do you mean when you say your identity was stolen? Did someone open up a new card in your name? Or was it something else?

Where do you live? Are you in the US, Gracie? If you are, you should call the three credit bureaus and notify them. There are also services that you can find which will protect you in case of identity theft in the future.

I do live in the US-- what are the three credit bureaus? I thought that there was one credit report that I could get every year.

What type of services can I find to help me?

And, Erin, I did put my cards on a temporary hold. What happened, is that someone had been using my identity to make purchases on other cards and the bills were sent to my home.

    Gracie,

So sorry you have to go though this.
By law, you are entitled to one free credit report from all three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). You can obtain those reports by either calling all thee bureaus or by going to http://www.annualcreditreport.com, a site sponsored by bureaus themselves, and get all three reports in one stop. It seems you may have done it already.

If you are an ID theft victim, the first thing you should do is to call any credit bureau and put an initial fraud alert. The bureau will communicate with other bureaus this information.

Call all of the accounts affected by the ID theft and follow up with a letter.

File a police report and/or an ID theft Affidavit, which you can find on the FTC website or on Identity Theft Manifesto main site.

If you go to http://www.identitytheftmanifesto.com, you will find plenty of information on what steps you should take if you are an Identity Theft Victim.

Gracie, I am so sorry this happened to you. I had an incident where someone stole my identity and it can be a long process to get everything straightened out. A lot depends on how long it went on before you discovered it.
