Fontana Police Bust Big ID Theft Ring

Police arrested two San Bernardino residents Friday in what Fontana police called one of the biggest counterfeit credit card and identity theft rings they’ve ever encountered.

Police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn in the 10500 block of Sierra Avenue Friday to investigate possible stolen or counterfeit cards being used to rent rooms, Sgt. Jeff Decker said.

Police discovered numerous counterfeit or stolen credit cards and identification cards along with a credit card laminating machine, computers, scanners, an embosser and other equipment, Decker said Saturday. The investigation also led police to a San Bernardino house where they found additional items connected to identity theft, he said. Read the full story

How To Avoid Fake Check Scams

(ARA) – You open your mail and to your surprise there is a check for $4,000 claiming you won a sweepstakes. Boy that money sure will come in handy right now. But wait, there’s a catch.

You’ve been instructed to wire a portion of the check to cover the taxes. You deposit the check and, after a couple of days, the bank gives you access to the money. A few weeks after wiring the money to supposedly cover the taxes, you learn that the check was counterfeit. Not only are you responsible for paying the money back to the bank, you may never be able to recover it from the criminal. Read the full story
